On the evening of July 26, 2023, a discussion meeting was held at the Conference room of Customs, Excise and VAT Commissionerate, Sylhet, Bangladesh, with the members of the UN ESCAP Connectivity Study team. Mr. Mohammad Akbar Hossain, Commissioner of the Customs, Excise and VAT Commissionerate, Sylhet, chaired the meeting. Ms. Mikiko Tanaka, Head, ESCAP Subregional Office for South and Southwest Asia led the ESCAP delegation. The delegation included members from UN ESCAP, BIMSTEC, UNDP, World Bank, CUTS International, BIISS, IIFL. Along with the senior officers of Customs, Excise and VAT Commissionerate, Sylhet, senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Roads Highways Department also attended the meeting.
The meeting mainly focused on transit, infrastructure development, and trade facilitation activities among BBIN countries, which include Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, and Nepal.
The participants emphasized on the capacity building and infrastructure development for ensuring smooth cross-border trade in this region.In addition, the ESCAP study team also visited Shaola and Tamabil Land Customs Stations to observe cross-border trade between Bangladesh and India.
At the end of the meeting, the participants joined a friendly dinner; and, finally, on behalf of the Customs and VAT Department of Bangladesh, the Commissioner presented a souvenir as a gift to the guests.
